Colorado Springs is home to one army base and four different Air Force installations. 

Aside from Schriever Air Force Base, all of these military installations border the city, so housing options off-base are plentiful. Homes for sale in Fort Carson Colorado offer affordable options and a variety of amenities. But in case you’re interested in different neighborhoods as they relate to the other military installations, we’ve provided an overview of each. 

 

Military Installations in Colorado Springs, CO

The United States Air Force Academy sits northwest of downtown central. Peterson Air Force Base is located on the east of the city, while Fort Carson Army Base and Cheyenne Mountain Air Force Base are both south of the city. Schriever Air Force base is farthest east. As you’re searching for homes for sale near Fort Carson, Colorado, it helps to know your potential daily commute times, in the event you will be living off-base. 

 

Commute Time for Colorado Springs, CO

The national average commute time throughout large cities is about 52 minutes each way. With Colorado Springs’ wide-spread footprint, traffic and commute times are reasonable. The average commute here is just 22 minutes each way – 30 minutes less than the big city average! Many of the early-start long commuters head north towards Denver and return back late evening. If your drive is located within the city, or headed in the opposite direction, you’ll experience shorter commute times. 

 

Most military personnel drive, however city-wide bus routes  and ample bike paths provide additional options. Over 100 miles of bike routes weave throughout the city, connecting all of the military installations by trail. The Colorado Springs Public Transit Buses begin between 5am and 7am and continue until 9pm. Buses are timed to hit each stop every half hour.

Downtown, Colorado Springs – 15 minute commute

For those that like city life, downtown Colorado Springs puts you right in the middle of the city’s active, thriving culture. With family-friendly houses in quaint neighborhoods only a few blocks from downtown, you’ll be able to walk to locally owned shops, restaurants, breweries and cafe’s. Fountain, CO – 20 minute commute 

Located just south of Colorado Springs, Fountain is an up-and-coming community that has recent growth including many ideal shopping and eating establishments. It’s close enough to enjoy all that Colorado Springs has to offer, yet it still provides that small-town living experience that many families appreciate. House prices in Fountain are more affordable than the Springs, making it an ideal starting place for young families. 

 

Manitou Springs – 22 minute commute 

Voted one of the Coolest Small Towns in the U.S., Manitou Springs is a historic district known for its natural mineral springs. It sits at the base of Pikes Peak and the back entrance to the Garden of the Gods. While not too many houses in Manitou Springs provide space enough for large families, it’s a great place to live if you love quirky small-town charm, artisan shops and restaurants, and limitless outdoor trails and entertainment.

Cimarron Hills – 5 minute commute

Rustic Hills Acres – 7 minute commute

Rockrimmon – 6 minute commute

Northgate – 11 minute commute
